![]() ![]() I think there were bigger differences model to model when they were tweed and brown amps.AA763 Tube layout (Seen from behind, V1 is to the right side) There is an obvious difference when moving up from the Deluxe to the Vibrolux, 6v6 vs 6L6. Pick what volume level you want to be at, and there you go. Speakers and size of the cab are what draw me to one model over the other. If you know what the fender sound is, you know what all these amps sound like for the most part. I don't care what anybody says indoor or outdoor. Loud enough for any gig if used properly. with the right guitar, the treble could literally kill you. Will still break up a bit but, it'll be loud. Super- Like a louder Pro with more thump. More focused but somehow seems quieterīassman- Head/Cab Kinda its own thing. Pro- little louder than the vibrolux with 12's instead of 10'sīigger cab, solid bass, probably the most underrated blackface amp IMOĬlosed back cab has big effect on sound. Loud enough, multiple speakers, good cab size Vibrolux- this is where it becomes serious. Good compromise in size/weight of cabinet for sound vs portability. Less boxy sounding but has that small amp soundĭeluxe -a professional level amp loud enough for a band and with the right speaker you'll still have clean headroom Princeton- loud clean practice amp or good small amp to play with light handed drummer in smaller band They all sound more similar than dissimilar.Ĭhamp -practice amp great for recording, jamming, practicing Here's my take and I own a Princeton Reverb and a Showman. What is farty and washed out in one, may be the highlight of another. The circuit may be the "same", but every amp sounds different. Point being, I've read this a number of times. I thought my '66 sounded good, my current '67 puts it to shame. Mind you, he hasn't heard to many, but my current '67 is one of the best Deluxes I've ever heard. Jimmy Somma completely went throught it and, I believe the combo of speaker and running 100% correctly, this amp has got some serious low end grunt.Īt "6", even though it loud as hell, my 9 year son grins ear to ear and keeps saying that is the best amp he has ever heard. Not sure if that matters.įast forward 18+ years, I now have my '67 w/ a '52 AVRI. Now, I was also playing a '92 Tele Plus w/ lace sensors through this amp. Even my '66 with the Oxford (Oxfart by some) it stayed together pretty well. I've had a '66 with stock Oxford and I have a late '67 w/ Emi Cannibus Rex.Īs you mentioned, at 6 on the volume dial is when these amps start to come alive. Not sure I agree with them not being decent or good above "6". In any event, according to the many BF-based homebrews that have passed across my perfboard, the AB763 is a terrific circuit. Bet you'll get good owner reports as this thread goes on tho. Can't fill in more detail as I've not owned any of the bigger guys, and I'd prefer to limit my IMHO's to stuff I actually own and play. Also monster hooked up with a 2x10.Īs you move up the food chain, you see bigger power supplies, bigger tubes, higher ratings, and generally tighter behaviors till you get to the other end of the BF spectrum. The Twin. BTW, be sure you have a good speaker in it.the later versions like the Deluxe Reverb II came with a really floppy Emi, but they come alive bigtime with a tighter speaker like a Weber 12F150 or one of the better Emi's or the like. You don't typically dime anything on a Deluxe as a result of their "weakness".any setting above 6 is a bit of a rarity with these.the beauty lies in restraint when pushing them. Lotta guys try to tighten the amp up, which you can easily do, but you gut the (immense) feel and the back-alley grunt when you do it. ![]() Basically a Deluxe is known for its rather "under-spec" power supply, which is most notable for causing the low end to get flabby and "fart out" as it's lovingly known. Do some searching on Deluxe threads here on TGP, esp in Amp Tech. ![]()
